For physiotherapists
Pilates courses for the progressive physiotherapist
Fisioplus Pilates courses are unique in that we teach much more than a series of Pilates exercises. We believe that success with patients directly correlates to the ability to evaluate the individual effectively. After all, pathologies are diverse and every patient presents in a slightly different way so why should we expect a standard routine of treatment and exercises to work for everyone with the same symptoms!
For this reason ALL Fisioplus Pilates courses include an extensive assessment tool relevant to each module that can easily be used in the physiotherapy workplace.
There are three modules:
- The lumbar spine, the pelvis and the lower limb
- The cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the shoulder girdle
- Practical Workshops
Module I The lumbar spine, the pelvis and the lower limb (16h)
- Theory lecture series; Fisioplus Pilates –what is it? why we need it? and how is it different from traditional Pilates.
- An overview of the pertinent research into the theory of muscle imbalance
- Workshop introducing the assessment tool which includes validated tests to analyse movement of the lumbar spine, the pelvis and the lower limb
- What do the results mean?
- A series of appropriate progressive Pilates matwork exercises are taught which can be applied to correct dysfunctions previously noted in the assessment section
- Real case studies are used to highlight the use of Fisioplus Pilates and its clinical relevance. Clinical reasoning workshop and when available “LIVE” case assessment and treatment planning
- Prior to attend module 2, participants are required to show 30 practical hours and submit 2 clinical case studies demonstrating the assessment, practical application and clinical reasoning of the use of a Fisioplus Pilates program.
Module II The cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the shoulder girdle (16 h)
- Theory lecture series; Biomechanics of movement, upper and lower limb. Understanding muscular slings improves the clinical reasoning skills which assist in the effective and correct prescription of Pilates
- Workshop introducing the assessment tool which includes tests to analyse the movement and function of the cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the shoulder girdle
- A series of progressive Pilates exercises are taught which are pertinent for the treatment of dysfunction that can be identified using the assessment tool.
- Group class revising all exercises covered in module 1 and 2.
- Real case studies illustrating the use of Fisioplus Pilates. Clinical reasoning workshop and “LIVE” upper limb case presentation and treatment planning
- Practical workshop combining the Pilates techniques learnt in module 1 and 2
- Clinical reasoning discussion analysing some of the case studies submitted by participants.
Module III Practical Workshops
- Workshop 1 - Diversifying Mat pilates (1/2 day). Following on from the previous core modules, this workshop teaches participants how to use Therabands, the swiss ball, foam rollers, spiky balls and the magic circle to adapt the Fisioplus Pilates repertoire further. Small inexpensive equiptment can be used to bridge difficulty levels or simply add a twist of fun, challenge and variety
- Workshop 2 – Class organiser (1/2 day). Many students having completed the core modules express an interest in running small personalized classes for their patients. This workshop looks at preparation needed for running a class, safety points and change of exercise choreography and flow. In small groups participants design pathology specific progressive classes based on module 1 and 2 material. During this process, justification of exercise choice is emphasised thus developing upon clinical reasoning skills tweaked in the core modules
- Workshop 3 – Fisioplus Pilates LIVE case studies (1 day). Owing to the popularity of the Fisioplus Pilates LIVE case presentations this module is a ”put everything into practice” Clinical reasoning discussion and practical workshop. Together, participants and presenters assess 3 diverse real patients using the assessment tools learnt in modules 1 and 2. We discuss the pathology, muscle imbalance and biomechanics theory appropriate to the case in hand and then design a progressive Fisioplus Pilates exercise program for the individual. Nothing beats this workshop, its unique and impossible to prepare for. Its REAL, its LIVE and really tweaks a physiotherapists evaluation skills, not to mention give confidence to apply Fisioplus Pilates in their own practice once they have left the course venue!!
